⛵ Valheim Sailing Guide

Last updated: July 2026 | Game version: 0.219.14+

Sailing is the key to exploration in Valheim. The sea connects every biome, and knowing how to navigate efficiently — reading the wind, avoiding serpents, and choosing the right ship — can mean the difference between a smooth voyage and a corpse run across the ocean.

This guide covers every ship, wind mechanic, navigation trick, and sea survival strategy.

🚢 Ship Comparison

Ship HP Speed Cargo Slots Crew Materials Unlock
🛶 Raft 200 Very Slow 4 1 20 Wood, 6 Leather Scraps, 10 Resin Base recipe
Karve 500 Fast 6 3 30 Fine Wood, 10 Deer Hide, 20 Resin, 80 Bronze Nails After Eikthyr
🚢 Longship 1000 Very Fast 18 10 100 Fine Wood, 10 Deer Hide, 40 Iron Nails, 4 Ancient Bark After Bonemass
🔥 Ashlands Ship 1200 Fast 20 10 40 Ashwood, 20 Flint Metal, 10 Proustite, 60 Iron Nails Late game

Ship Recommendations

Stage Recommended Ship Why
Meadows / Black Forest Karve Fast enough, decent cargo, can handle most waters
Swamp / Mountains KarveLongship Upgrade to Longship when you need bulk iron transport
Plains / Mistlands Longship Max cargo for hauling black metal, flax, and sap
Ashlands Ashlands Ship Required for lava-safe sailing and defense

🌬️ Wind System

How Wind Works

Valheim uses a dynamic wind system. The wind direction changes periodically and affects your sailing speed:

Wind vs Heading Speed Effect
🟢 Tailwind (with you) Full speed — 2× normal
🟡 Side wind (90°) ~70% speed, but you can tack
🔴 Headwind (against you) ~30% speed — very slow, consider waiting or tacking

Tacking (Beating Against the Wind)

When sailing into a headwind, use tacking — zigzag at ~45° angles to make progress:

    Wind ← ← ←
   ╱ (zigzag pattern)
Start ──────────────────→ Destination

Tacking tips: - Turn 45° off the wind direction, sail until you're off course, then turn 45° the other way - The Longship handles tacking better than the Karve - In open ocean, you can wait for the wind to change instead of tacking - Coastal waters make tacking harder — rocks and shorelines limit your angle

Wind Prediction

  • Wind changes every 1–3 in-game days
  • Watch the wind sock on your mast — it shows current direction
  • Morning often brings wind shifts
  • If stuck, drop anchor (press Z) and wait — but beware of sea creatures while stationary

Coastal Sailing (Safest)

Always prefer coastal routes over open ocean crossings:

Route Type Safety Speed When to Use
🟢 Coastal High Moderate First exploration, unknown waters
🟡 Short cut Medium Fast Known routes, between close islands
🔴 Open ocean Low Fastest Crossing large gaps, experienced sailors

Night Sailing

  • Pros: Wind is often stronger at night
  • Cons: Visibility drops, serpent encounters more dangerous
  • Tip: Stay near coast at night, use the minimap to navigate

Reading the Map

  • Your position is shown as a ship icon on the map
  • Mark danger zones (serpent spawns, shallow rocks) on your map
  • Use waypoints to mark landing spots before sailing
  • Daytime sailing gives you better visibility to spot landmarks

Finding Key Locations

Target Navigation Method
Haldor (Merchant) Black Forest near spawn — listen for music, look for glowing torch
Bonemass location Vegvisir in Sunken Crypts — mark on map before sailing
Mistlands edge Look for giant skull-shaped rocks on the horizon
Ashlands coast Follow the southern edge of the map — red-tinted sky

🐍 Ocean Dangers

Serpent

Stat Value
HP 400–600 (varies with difficulty)
Damage 60–80 per bite
Spawn Random ocean encounters, night spawns more common
Drops Serpent Scale, Serpent Meat, Trophy

Serpent hunting tips: - Harpoon + drag to shore — easiest kill method (they beach and can't move) - Fire arrows — most effective ranged weapon - Stay at range — serpents can't damage your ship from far away - Use the wind — tailwind lets you outrun them - Night serpents are stronger — avoid open ocean at night early game

Shallow Water & Rocks

  • Stones and reefs can beach or damage your ship
  • Watch for dark patches in the water — hidden rocks
  • When exploring unknown coastlines, slow down by raising sails (W key slower = Shift+W or sail at partial speed)
  • If you beach, use logs to push off, or break parts of your ship to reduce weight

Dangerous Biomes in the Ocean

Biome Danger Notes
Swamp coast Draugr archers, leeches Stay 2+ boat lengths from shore
Plains coast Deathsquitos, Lox Deathsquitos can reach your ship!
Mistlands coast Gjall, Seekers A Gjall can destroy a parked ship
Ashlands coast Lava bombs, Charred High heat may damage your ship

📦 Cargo Transport

Iron Transport (The Classic Run)

The most common long-distance shipping is iron from the Swamp:

Preparation:
1. Build a Longship (more cargo)
2. Clear a Sunken Crypt fully
3. Fill inventory + ship with iron scraps
4. Sail home in daylight
5. Bring portal materials for quick return

One Longship load: ~30 stacks of iron = 900 iron scraps

Bulk Cargo Guide

Cargo Source Biome Recommended Ship Trips
Iron Swamp Longship 2–3 full crypts
Silver Mountains Longship (downhill slide) 1–2 trips
Black Metal Plains Longship 1 trip per farm
Flax/Barley Plains Longship 2–3 farming trips
Sap/Black Marble Mistlands Longship Multiple trips

Portal-Shortcut Strategy

Place portal pairs before big cargo runs:

  1. Sail to destination with portal materials
  2. Set up portal, return instantly to base
  3. Take Longship out fully loaded
  4. Sail back (one-way)

This saves you from sailing back empty.

🔥 Ashlands Waters

The Ashlands update introduced new ocean mechanics:

Feature Description
Lava waters Regular ships take damage in Ashlands waters
Ashlands Ship Heat-resistant, required for safe travel
Volcanic surges Waves can capsize small boats
New sea creatures Lava eels, charred floaters
Ashland islands Small landings with unique resources

Tips for Ashlands sailing: - Do not take a Karve or Longship into Ashlands waters — they burn - Build the Ashlands Ship before attempting sea exploration there - Keep health meads on the hotbar for emergency healing - The Ashlands ship can also traverse normal waters, so it's a viable endgame all-rounder

🎯 Quick Reference
