🐞 Grounded Boss & Creature Guide

Last updated: June 2026 | Game version: 1.4 "Fully Yoked"

Grounded's backyard is packed with creatures ranging from harmless aphids to legendary boss spiders that can wipe out a full four-player squad. This guide covers every major boss fight, all common and dangerous creatures, and the combat strategies you need to survive the yard.

Unlike most survival games, Grounded uses an elemental weakness system — some bugs take extra damage from slashing (spider fang dagger), others from busting (mint mace), and others from chopping (termite axe). Using the right weapon type doubles your effective DPS.

🦂 Legendary Bosses

Grounded features five legendary boss fights, each tied to story progress or special summoning items.

1. Broodmother (Hedge)

The first proper boss you'll face. The Broodmother is a giant spider deep inside the Hedge — specifically in the Broodmother Lair, accessible through a spider-web tunnel near the Hedge lab entrance.

Summoning: Place a Broodmother BLT (1 Ladybug Head + 1 Bombardier Part + 1 Thistle Needle + 1 Crow Feather Piece in a spinning wheel) into the wall-mounted hatch at the lair entrance.

Recommended Level: 5–7 with Tier-1 weapons, or 4+ with Tier-2 weapons Recommended Gear:

Slot Best Choice Alternative
Weapon Spider Fang Dagger (slashing) Red Ant Club (generic)
Armor Ladybug Set (tank) Acorn Set
Trinket Thor's Pendant Ladybug Trinket
Consumables 5x Beefy Slurry, 3x Liquid Gills Bandages, Weevil Juice

Elemental Weakness: Fresh (mint-related damage — use Mint Mace if you have it)

Attack Pattern:

Attack Description Counter
Claw Swipe 3-hit combo, moderate speed Perfect block all three, then counter
AOE Slam Rises up, slams ground — shockwave Jump over the shockwave
Web Spit Slows you for 5 seconds Hold block — the web can't hit you through it
Spiderling Swarm Spawns 4–6 small spiders at 60% and 30% HP AOE attack or run in a circle until they clump, then kill with one swing

Phase 1 (100%–60% HP): Mostly claw swipes and web spits. Conserve stamina for perfect blocks. Never let your stamina bar drop below 30% — you need it for the shockwave jump.

Phase 2 (60%–30% HP): Adds AOE slam and spiderling spawns. Kill spiderlings with two swings each. The AOE slam is telegraphed by the Broodmother rising on her hind legs — watch for this animation.

Phase 3 (30%–0% HP): Enraged — faster combos, more spiderlings, less recovery between attacks. Use smoothies during the 4 seconds after her slam. Pop a Liquid Gills for health regen if you have it.

Drops: Broodmother Head (trophy), Broodmother Fang (weapon crafting), Broodmother Armor materials, Spider Silk (10–20).

2. Mant (Sandbox)

The Mant is an infected mantis found in the Sandbox — specifically inside the sand castle. The boss arena is a large stone chamber filled with haze spores.

Summoning: Place a Mantis Bait (3 Mantis Part + 1 Crow Feather Piece + 2 Grub Hide) on the stone altar inside the sand castle.

Recommended Level: 9–11, Tier-4 weapons recommended Recommended Gear:

Slot Best Choice Alternative
Weapon Mint Mace (fresh) or Crossbow Tick Bat (salty)
Armor Fire Ant Set (bleed synergy) Roly Poly Set
Consumables 5x Fuzz on the Rocks, 2x Liquid Rage Beefy Slurry, Liquid Gills

Elemental Weakness: Fresh (+35% damage from mint weapons)

Attack Pattern:

Attack Phase Description Counter
Scythe Swipe 1–2 Wide slash, 3-hit combo Perfect block timing is tight — early block is safer
Slam 1–2 Drops from above, AOE 8m Sprint away when he disappears from view
Gas Spores 1 Fires 3 spore clouds Don't stand in the green mist — DOT damage
Enrage Flurry 2–3 Rapid 6-hit combo Block first 3, roll away from last 3
Leaping Slash 3 Jumps high, targeted slam Roll toward him (not away)

Fight Strategy:

  1. Phase 1 (100%–60% HP): The Mant is aggressive from the start. Use the arena pillars to break line-of-sight during gas spore casts. The scythe swipe has a slight delay on the third hit — don't panic-block early.
  2. Phase 2 (60%–30% HP): He starts disappearing and slamming from above. Watch for the shadow on the ground. When you see it, sprint in a straight line. He also gets the enrage flurry — this is a DPS check. If your DPS is too low, the fight becomes impossible.
  3. Phase 3 (30%–0% HP): The Mant spams the leap slash. His recovery after a miss is 3 seconds — this is your best DPS window. Pop Liquid Rage and unload. If you're using crossbow, headshots deal 2x damage in phase 3.

Drops: Mantis Head (trophy), Mant Scythe (legendary weapon, deals slashing + poison), Mantis Armor materials, Supreme Sparkburst (20–30).

3. Infected Broodmother (Haze)

A harder, infected version of the Broodmother that spawns in the Haze Lab after you complete the main story. This is widely considered the hardest boss in Grounded.

Summoning: Use the Infected Broodmother Summoning Station inside the Haze Lab — requires 3 Infected Broodmother Parts (dropped by infected bugs in the Haze) + 1 Broodmother Head.

Recommended Level: 12–14, Tier-4 weapons with Sour upgrades Recommended Gear:

Slot Best Choice
Weapon Sour Battle-Axe (sour damage — her weakness)
Armor Broodmother Set (poison immunity) or Fire Ant Set
Trinket Thor's Pendant (stun chance)
Consumables 5x Fuzz on the Rocks, 3x Liquid Rage, Immunity Fuzzies

Elemental Weakness: Sour — her main weakness. Sour weapons deal +50% damage. Fresh weapons deal normal damage. Salty and spicy are ineffective.

Unique Mechanics:

  • Poison aura: The Infected Broodmother constantly emits a poison aura. Inside the poison cloud, you take 15 DPS. Broodmother armor negates this entirely.
  • Explosive pustules: She fires pustules that stick to the ground and explode after 3 seconds. Don't stand near them.
  • Fungal infection: Every hit has a 20% chance to apply "Fungal Infection" — your attacks deal 50% less damage for 10 seconds. Cures with Immunity Fuzzies.

Fight Strategy:

This is a 20–30 minute fight on a solo run. Don't rush.

  1. Pre-place a camp 50m from the arena. Stock it with 10+ smoothies and spare armor.
  2. Phase 1 (100%–50% HP): Play defensive. Learn her 5-hit combo (she swings 5 times, Broodmother only does 3). After the combo, she pauses for 2 seconds — land 2 hits. Avoid pustules.
  3. Phase 2 (50%–20% HP): More pustules, faster combos, and she begins a lunging attack. Perfect block the lunge — it stuns her for 4 seconds. This is your only extended DPS window.
  4. Phase 3 (20%–0% HP): Near-constant poison aura. Pop Immunity Fuzzies and Liquid Rage simultaneously. DPS race. Don't stop moving.

Drops: Infected Broodmother Head (superior trophy), Infected Broodmother Armor (best-in-slot poison immune), Broodmother Fang (upgrade material).

4. Wasp Queen (Upper Yard)

The matriarch of the wasp hives in the Upper Yard. Found inside the Wasp Nest — a giant paper hive hanging from the shed deck.

Summoning: Break open the hive entrance (requires Tier-3 axe), then interact with the queen's chamber. She doesn't need a bait — she's always present once you reach the innermost chamber.

Recommended Level: 11–13 Weakness: Spicy — wasps are vulnerable to fire/spice damage.

Unique Mechanic: The Queen summons infinite worker wasps throughout the fight. If you don't have AOE or a fast weapon, you'll be overwhelmed.

Fight Strategy:

  1. Bring a Spicy weapon (upgrade any Tier-4 weapon with spicy globs at the smithing station).
  2. Clear all wasps in the outer nest BEFORE entering the Queen's chamber.
  3. Phase 1: Kill the workers as soon as they spawn. Use a crossbow with spicy arrows to one-shot them.
  4. Phase 2: The Queen herself. She's slow but has a devastating stinger attack. Stay behind her.
  5. When she flies to the ceiling, she's about to drop a stinger bomb. Sprint out of the arena chamber.

Drops: Wasp Queen Head (trophy), Wasp Queen Stinger (legendary dagger), Wasperole (pet summon).

5. Schmector (Endgame)

The final boss of Grounded's "Fully Yoked" content. A giant robotic creature that guards the Moldorc Castle.

Location: Moldorc Castle, accessed through the upper yard's far corner after completing all previous story labs.

Recommended Level: 14+, fully upgraded Tier-4 weapons Weakness: Sour (+50% damage from sour weapons)

Fight Strategy: A multi-phase mechanical boss with turrets, laser beams, and summoned minibots. This fight requires all four players working together in co-op or near-perfect dodging solo. The key mechanic is destroying the power cores on his chassis — each core destroyed removes a weapon system.

Drops: Schmector Head (trophy), Raw Science (2000), Moldorc Castle Key.

⚔️ Combat Mechanics & Tips

Perfect Blocking

Every creature in Grounded telegraphs its attacks with a wind-up animation. Press block just before impact to perform a perfect block. Successfully perfect-blocking:

  • Reduces incoming damage to zero
  • Staggers the attacker for 1–2 seconds
  • Refills a portion of your stamina
  • Builds the enemy's stun meter (get enough perfect blocks and the enemy is stunned for 5+ seconds)

Practice on: Worker ants (slow, predictable 2-hit combos) → Orb weavers (faster, 3-hit combos) → Wolf spiders (fast, 5-hit combos with fake-outs).

Elemental Weakness Chart

Damage Type Effective Against Ineffective Against Crafting Source
Generic All (standard) None Pebblet/Insect weapons
Fresh Broodmother, Mantis, Fire Ants, Black Widow Saladmanders, Stinkbugs Mint fragments
Spicy Wasps, Mosquitoes, Diving Bell Spiders Antlions, Bombardiers Spicy coaltana / spice shards
Salty Antlions, Water Fleas, Toads Broodmother, Mantis Salt chunks
Sour Infected Broodmother, Schmector Generic creatures Spoiled meat slurry / sour globs

Busting Ants, Stinkbugs, Larva Spiders, Bees Mint Mace, Club

Stamina Management

Stamina is the most important stat in Grounded. Running out of stamina mid-combat is a death sentence. Rules:

  • Always keep 30% stamina in reserve for dodging or blocking
  • Attack in bursts — 3 hits → pause 2 seconds → repeat
  • Don't sprint in combat — it drains stamina faster than you recover it
  • Smoothies restore stamina instantly — craft Fuzz on the Rocks (1 Gnatch + 1 Aphid Honey + 1 Mushroom)
Role Mutations Focus
Melee DPS Meat Shield + Blade Master + Coup de Grass + Hulk Smash Damage + survivability
Ranged DPS Meat Shield + Sharpshooter + Coup de Grass + Merteen Bow damage + stamina
Tank Meat Shield + Natural Explorer + Coup de Grass + Trapper PEEP.R HP + slow enemies
Healer/Buffer Natural Explorer + Soft Feet + Quickness + Buff Lungs Mobility + buffs
