Lighting Guide

Lighting changes the entire feel of a build. Layer multiple light sources for depth.

Light Sources

Source Light Color Range Fuel Best Use
Campfire Warm yellow 8m Wood Central hearth, great hall center
Hearth Warm yellow 10m Wood Indoor cooking + light in main hall
Torch Warm orange 6m Resin Wall sconces every 4m
Standing Iron Torch Warm orange 8m Resin Interior corridor lighting
Sconce Warm amber 5m Resin Wall-mounted hallway lights
Brazier Warm yellow 10m Coal Grand hall, throne room
Hanging Brazier Warm yellow 10m Coal Cathedral ceilings, tall rooms
Dverger Lantern Cool blue 6m None (permanent) Functional task areas
Wisp Torch Purple 8m None (permanent) Mistlands aesthetic
Jack-o-Turnip Warm orange 5m Resin Decorative garden lights
Blue Merry Cool blue 5m Resin Festive / winter decor
Green Merry Green 5m Resin Ceiling accent in dark builds

Lighting Design Rules

Rule 1: Light at 3 heights
  1. Floor level — braziers, campfires (creates warm pool)
  2. Eye level — sconces, standing torches (illuminates rooms)
  3. Ceiling — hanging braziers, chandeliers (high drama)

Rule 2: Color temperature contrast
  - Warm (torches) + Cool (Dverger lanterns) = depth
  - Never use all same color — looks flat

Rule 3: Shadows create atmosphere
  - Space sconces 5m apart — pools of light between
  - Leave ceiling corners dark in great halls
  - Use Jack-o-Turnips in dark corners for accent

Rule 4: Functional lighting first
  - Crafting stations need bright light (Dverger lantern)
  - Dining tables need warm light (campfire)
  - Bedrooms need dim light (single sconce)

Max Comfort Blueprint

To reach Comfort 17 (current maximum), place:

Position 1: Dragon Bed (2) — bedroom alcove
Position 2: Hearth (2) — center of great hall
Position 3-6: Sitting Log ×4 (4) — around hearth (folded = counts ×4)
Position 7-10: Banner ×4 (4) — on walls facing the hall
Position 11-14: Rug ×4 (4) — 2 Deer + 2 Wolf on floor
Position 15-18: Trophy ×4 (4) — mounted on interior walls

Total: 18 items → capped at 17
Key: Item counts in parentheses = comfort value
💡 Comfort tip: Place sitting logs FOLDED against the hearth perimeter
(not unfolded around a table). Folded logs count as sitting logs but
take half the floor space. 4 folded logs around 1 hearth = +6 comfort
in a 2×2 tile area.

Exterior Design Tips

Roofing Patterns

Roof Type Angle Material Look
Classic steep 47° Thatch Traditional longhouse
Modern moderate 26° Tarred shingle Castle / contemporary
Flat / battlements 26° Stone Fortress with parapets
Asymmetric Mixed 26°+47° Mixed Organic, natural feel
Cathedral 47° cross-gable Thatch + Tarred Church-like tall nave

Wall Patterns

  • Alternating panels: Wood wall + Core Wood cross-beam: 2m of each repeated
  • Half-timbered: Stone lower wall (1m) + Wood upper wall (2m) = Tudor style
  • Double height: Remove floor on one section for a 4m tall great hall with balconies
  • Bay windows: Extend a 1m section outward with glass (Crystal walls) for a viewing alcove

Decorative Elements

Element Materials Effect
Window boxes Wood 26° + Cultivator-tilled soil Flowers visible through windows
Garden paths Hoe + Path tool Gravel paths between buildings
Overhanging eaves 1m wood beam + 26° roof edge extension Prevents rain on walls
Porch 1m raised platform with roof overhang Entry transition space
Fence lines Core Wood stakewall Property boundary definition
Wharves / docks Core Wood poles + Wood floor over water Harbor aesthetic

Structural Engineering

Support Span Limits

Material Max Horizontal Span With Iron Beam Reinforcement
Wood 8m (4 tiles) 12m (6 tiles) with Iron Pole
Core Wood 6m (3 tiles) 10m (5 tiles) with Iron Pole
Stone 4m (2 tiles) 8m (4 tiles) with Iron Cage
Black Marble 4m (2 tiles) 8m (4 tiles) with Black Marble reinforcement
Iron Cage 12m (6 tiles) — (self-supporting)

Roof Support Tips

  • Start from the bottom. Roof pieces need support from the walls below — place bottom rows first.
  • Center ridge beam. A Core Wood or Dark Wood beam down the ridge line dramatically improves roof stability.
  • Iron-reinforced long spans. For great halls wider than 8m, run Iron Cages under the ridge beam hidden in the ceiling.
  • Stone arches. Stone arches can span 6m unsupported — use them for cathedral-style entries.

Biome-Specific Building Tips

Biome Challenge Solution
Meadows Limited stone Use Core Wood for foundations, build elevated
Black Forest Trees blocking Build among the pines — elevated platforms save clearing
Swamp Wet, poison, limited sunlight Build on indestructible trees. Roof early. Wisp torches for light.
Mountains Cold, vertical terrain Frost Resist mead + terraced foundations on slopes
Plains Deathsquitos, Fulings Fortified stone walls. No windows at ground level. Moat perimeter.
Mistlands Mist, vertical, Gjalls Clear mist with Wisp. Build on pillars. Black Marble resists Gjall fire.
Ashlands Heat, lava, constant attacks Ask armor buildings, stone foundations, defensive walls mandatory

All data current as of Valheim v0.219.14. Comfort calculations based on the in-game furniture system. Build tall, build proud — and always raise your roof.
