DST Base Building Guide

Building a well-planned base in Don't Starve Together is the single most important survival decision you will make. A strong base keeps you safe from hounds, seasonal hazards, and raids while providing the infrastructure needed to thrive through all four seasons.

This guide covers everything from picking the right biome to building mega-bases that last hundreds of days.

Biome Selection

Not all biomes are equal for base-building. The location of your base affects travel time, resource availability, and seasonal survival. Below is a ranking of the best options.

Biome Food & Water Resources Seasonal Safety Verdict
Deciduous Forest Berry bushes, catcoons Grass, twigs, logs nearby Good year-round 🌟 Best overall
Desert (Summer) Cactus, buzzards Gears (tumbleweeds), gold Summer-safe Strong seasonal
Savanna Beefalo, rabbits Grass tufts abundant Moderate Good early-game
Pig King Forest Pig king for gold Many trees, mushrooms Moderate Good trading hub
Rockyland Boulders, flint Stone, nitre, gold Harsh in winter Niche
Swamp Tentacles, reeds Reeds, frogs Dangerous at night ❌ Avoid
Mosaic (Rocky) Walrus camps nearby Gears, bishops Moderate OK for advanced

Deciduous Forest is the top choice because it offers: - Abundant berry bushes and grass tufts to transplant - Catcoons for occasional meat and grooming - Central location on most world seeds - Easy access to other biomes via wormholes - Mild weather with no extreme heat or cold

Base Layout

A standard base fits inside an 18×18 tile grid, which is the range of a single Hearth (required for the Warming effect and anti-griefing). Plan your layout before placing turfs.

Core Zone (Center)

Structure Qty Purpose
Science Machine 1 Unlock early tech
Alchemy Engine 1 Mid-game prototyping
Shadow Manipulator 1 Late-game magic (shadow items)
Prestihatitator 1 Early hat / magic
Cooking Pot 4-6 Bulk food production
Ice Box 3-4 Perishable food storage
Crock Pot 2-3 Advanced recipes
Drying Racks 8-12 Jerky production (long-lasting meat)
Chests 6-10 Item sorting (label by category)

Farm Zone

Structure Qty Purpose
Improved Farm 8-12 Vegetable production
Berry Bush 20-30 Transplanted from biome, fertilized
Grass Tuft 20-40 Transplanted, fertilized
Sapling (Twiggy Tree) 20-30 Twig supply, renewable
Bee Box 4-6 Honey + bee bombs (optional)

Turf Placement

Lay down Wood Flooring or Cobblestone in high-traffic areas for a speed boost. Use Checkerboard Flooring for aesthetics around the Hearth. Keep a 2-tile wide path between structures to avoid bumping into furniture during fights.

🪓 Pro tip: Always leave at least one tile gap between the core zone and walls — hound attacks and fire spread can jump gaps.

Wall Types & Defenses

Walls are your first line of defense. Each material has a different durability and cost.

Material HP Cost Best Use
Grass 300 2 Cut Grass Temporary pen for animals
Wood 500 2 Logs Standard perimeter
Stone 1000 2 Cut Stone Late-game perimeter
Thulecite 2000 1 Thulecite + 1 N2O Best — rush ruins
Moon Rock 1000 2 Moon Rock Lunar-aligned, niche
Hay Wall 100 1 Cut Grass Very weak, avoid

Wall Building Strategy

Technique Layout Use Case
Single Wall Ring 1 layer around base Early game, temporary
Double Wall Ring 2 layers, 1 tile gap Standard defense
Double + Tooth Traps Gap filled with tooth traps Hound-proof mid-game
Triple Wall + Traps 3 layers, traps in corridors Megabase / long-term

Recommended: Build a double wall with a 1-tile gap. Place tooth traps in the gap so hounds are killed before they damage the inner wall. Use Stone Walls as the outer layer and Thulecite Walls for the inner (or Wood if Thulecite is scarce).

Tooth Trap Fields

Tooth traps are the most effective hound defense in the game.

Animal Source Drop Rate Trap Damage Spoils?
Hound Teeth ~40% N/A (craft) No
Tooth Trap (placed) N/A 30 to mobs No
Tooth Trap (rearm) N/A 30 again Auto
Trap Count Coverage Material Cost Season Ready By
10 Light defense 30 Hound Teeth Autumn (early)
20 Standard 60 Hound Teeth Winter
30 Hound-proof 90 Hound Teeth Spring
40+ Megabase 120+ Hound Teeth Year 2+

Placement: Lay traps in a 3-wide, staggered row outside your walls, covering the sides hounds approach from. You will need at least 20 traps for reliable protection against hound waves. Traps auto-rearm after being triggered — just pick up and re-place any that break.

Hound Defense Comparison

Method Setup Cost Maintenance Effectiveness Risk
Tooth Trap Field High (teeth) Low ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Excellent) Low
Walls Only Medium High ⭐⭐ (Poor — breaks) Hounds dig under walls
Bee Bombs Medium Medium ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Good) Requires bee boxes
Houndius Shootius Very High None ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Best) Requires ruins farming
Lureplant + Traps Low Low ⭐⭐⭐ (Decent) Eyeplants burn easily
Beefalo Herd Kiting None None ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Good early) Hounds may target base

Bottom line: Tooth traps + double walls is the most practical combination for most players. Upgrade to Houndius Shootius turrets (from the Ruins) once you can farm Ancient Guardian reliably.

Seasonal Preparation

Each season requires specific base additions to keep you alive and productive.

Summer

Item Qty Purpose
Ice Flingomatic 2-4 Auto-extinguish smoldering structures
Thermal Stone 1 Cool in Ice Box / Endothermic Fire
Endothermic Fire Pit 1 Cools you down (no range limit)
Umbrella / Parasol 1 Reduce overheating (also good Spring)
Summer Frest (hat) 1 Best summer head-slot item
Ice (in Ice Boxes) 20+ Emergency cooling

Place Ice Flingomatics within range of your farms, walls, and key structures. Their range is ~1.5 screen widths — check coverage during summer prep.

Winter

Item Qty Purpose
Thermal Stone 1-2 Keep warm near fire
Winter Hat / Beefalo Hat 1 Slow hypothermia rate
Hibearnation Vest 1 Best winter clothing (Koalefant trunk)
Campfire / Fire Pit 1-2 Heat source in base
Drying Racks (full) 8+ Jerky lasts through winter
Crock Pot Recipes Meatballs, pierogi, bacon & eggs

Key tip: Pre-cook 20+ Meatballs and store them in an Ice Box before winter. You will spend less time hunting and more time managing freezing.

Spring

Item Qty Purpose
Umbrella / Eyebrella 1 Wetness protection
Rain Hat 1 Backup wetness head-slot
Lightning Rod 2-3 Protect structures from lightning
Sewing Kit 2+ Repair umbrellas as they wear
Flingomatic 1 Dry yourself near (optional)
Frog Rain Preparation Build a frog-proof pen or escape pod

Lightning rods are mandatory in Spring — place one within range of your entire base. Lightning strikes can destroy chests, ice boxes, and even walls.

Farm Setup

Farming in DST goes beyond simple plots. A well-organized farm belt ensures year-round food.

Farm Type Yield Watering Seasonality Notes
Improved Farm 1 veggie / day Yes All seasons Basic, reliable
Advanced Farm 1 veggie / day Yes All seasons Faster growth
Berry Bush 1 berry / 3-4d Manure only Summer dormant Fertilize once transplanted
Grass Tuft 1 grass / 2-3d Manure only Winter dormant Need 30+ for steady supply
Sapling (Twiggy) 1 twig / 2-3d None Winter dormant Renewable, replant often
Bee Box Honey / 4-6d Near flowers Winter bees dormant Honey lasts forever

Recommended ratios for a team of 4 players: - 30+ Berry Bushes - 40+ Grass Tufts - 20+ Saplings or Twiggy Trees - 12 Improved Farms - 6 Bee Boxes (near 10+ flowers)

Fertilize transplanted Berry Bushes and Grass Tufts immediately with Manure or Guano — they will not produce otherwise.

Beefalo Domestication (Optional)

Domesticated Beefalo provide an excellent source of manure, wool, and meat plus a mount for fast travel. While not essential for base defence, a Beefalo herd near your base helps with early hound waves.

Stage Action Required Time Required Benefit
Lure to base Beefalo Horn + patience 2-3 days Close herd for kiting
Bell (Domestic) Craft Beefalo Bell Start domestication
Feed regularly Cut grass / twigs 10-20 days Gain domestication meter
Groom daily Grooming brush 10-15 days Prevents domestication decay
Fully domestic Ride + feed + groom 30-40 days Fast mount, exclusive saddle items

Base placement: Build a fenced pen (Grass Walls are fine) near the farm zone. Keep at least 1 Beefalo in the pen for steady manure production.

Advanced: Megabase Layouts

For long-term worlds (500+ days), consider these expansion strategies.

Layout Type Features Best For Complexity
Grid Base Everything in 18×18 modules Organization Low
Radial Base Hearth in center, rings outward Aesthetics Medium
Biome Base Dispersed per biome function Thematic RP High
Underground Base Built in Caves / Ruins Late-game nomad Very High
Boat Base Built on ocean platforms Mobile base High

Grid Base is the most popular for organized communities: each 18×18 module has a dedicated purpose (living, farms, storage, magic, etc.) separated by Cobblestone roads.

Decorative Building

Endgame is about making your base feel like home.

Decoration Item Source Aesthetic
Carpets / Rugs Pig King trades Colorful floor covering
Chandelier Ancient Pseudoscience Luxurious ceiling light
Lantern Nightmare Thulecite Hanging purple glow
Dimensional Rift Celestial Champion Post-story portal decoration
Flower Baskets Gathered flowers Simple charm
Sculptures Marble + Magnus Art pieces / guard statues
Mini Signs Boards Label every chest clearly

🎨 Pro tip: Use Cartographer's Desk to create custom map markers for your base modules so teammates can navigate easily.
