Sons of the Forest Survival Guide

Sons of the Forest is a brutal survival horror game. This guide covers everything from your first 10 minutes on the island to building a fortified base that can survive endgame mutant waves.

Day 1: Crash Landing Survival

Immediate Priority List

Order Action Materials Needed Why
1 Find a water source Thirst kills in ~2 days
2 Collect 10 sticks Ground pickup Shelter + fire
3 Collect 5 rocks Ground pickup Stone axe + fire ring
4 Build a temporary shelter 10 sticks Saves the game
5 Craft a Stone Axe 5 sticks + 2 rocks Chop trees efficiently
6 Craft a Bow 5 sticks + 3 cloth + 1 rope Ranged hunting
7 Kill 1-2 rabbits Bow or spear Meat + hide
8 Build a fire 5 sticks + 3 rocks Cook meat, warmth, light

What NOT to Do on Day 1

Mistake Consequence
Attack cannibals They remember and bring more. Plus you have no armor — one hit = 50% HP
Sleep without fire Wake up freezing, lose HP throughout the night
Enter caves unprepared Caves are late-day content. No weapons = death
Build a permanent base immediately Day 1 is about survival, not architecture. Wait until you've scouted
Eat raw meat Raw rabbit = 5 food, 5 health damage. Cooked = 10 food, 0 damage

Companion Management: Kelvin

Kelvin's Follow Mode Commands

Kelvin is your silent, injured companion. He takes written notes and follows verbal commands via the command book (press 'C' on keyboard, or open the radial menu).

Command Interaction What Kelvin Does
Fetch Logs, Rocks, Fish, Stick, Small Rocks Gathers the specified resource within ~50m radius
Build Shelter, Wall, Bed, Fire Constructs the specified structure
Repair Repair Fixes the nearest damaged structure
Attack To specific enemy type Kills wildlife ONLY (rabbits, deer, squirrels)
Rest No fighting Sits near base, stays out of combat
Follow Stays by your side
Wait Stays at current position until recalled

Kelvin's best uses: - Fetch Logs: Set him to gather wood while you explore. 10 logs = 1 wall segment. He can gather 20+ logs in the time it takes you to build - Build a fire: Always have him start a fire while you prepare food - Build walls: He auto-constructs defensive walls around your base marker - Fish gathering: Set him to fetch fish near water = passive food income

Kelvin Health Management

  • Kelvin takes damage but CANNOT die from cannibal attacks below a certain AI threshold (he'll crawl and recover)
  • He CAN die from fall damage, drowning, or friendly fire
  • Heal Kelvin: Give him a Meds item (right-click in backpack while near him)
  • If Kelvin gets knocked down: Wait ~30 seconds, he recovers. Don't shoot near him

Companion Management: Virginia

Virginia is a three-legged mutant who starts as a hostile NPC. She becomes a companion through a trust system.

Trust Progression

Stage Trust Level Behavior Unlocks
0 0-25% Flees from you Nothing
1 25-50% Watches from distance She approaches the edge of your base
2 50-75% Approaches your base Takes food from your hand
3 75-100% Follows you Fights alongside you, gives gifts
4 100% Best friend Gives you machine gun pistols, dances, plays

How to Gain Trust Fast

Action Points Gained Repeatable?
Give her food (berries, meat) +5 Yes, 2x per day
Let her close without attacking +2 Passive
Have her near you during combat +3 per fight Yes
Give her a weapon +10 One-time (pistol, shotgun)
Complete story events near her +15 Per location
Attack her -25 Avoid at all costs

Weapons for Virginia: Once she reaches trust level 2, drop a pistol (with ammo) on the ground near her. She'll pick it up and holster it. Later, upgrade her to shotgun. At max trust, she uses twin machine pistols.

Base Building: Fortification Strategies

Base Location Considerations

Location Pros Cons
Beach near crash site Flat, easy access to water, logs nearby Cannibal patrols frequent in late game
Lake island Natural moat, easy defense Limited building space, must swim/logs
Cliff plateau Defensible, single approach Difficult to expand
Forest interior Abundant trees, cover Hard to see approaching threats

Best beginner base location: The beach peninsula east of the crashed helicopter. Flat ground, ocean on 3 sides, dense forest behind. Build walls along the forest side only.

Defense Layers (Top to Bottom Priority)

Layer Materials Purpose
Deadfall traps Logs + rope (5 per trap) First wave defense — kills cannibals outright
Spike barricade Part logs ×15 per segment Slows and damages enemies
Stone wall Stones (30 per segment) Fireproof, high HP — essential for night 15+
Wood wall backup Logs (10 per segment) Cheaper, burns — place inside stone walls
Second wall layer Any Bunker-style defense
Interior firing platform Logs + planks Elevated shooting position

Base Building Checklist

  1. [ ] 4x4 foundation (logs)
  2. [ ] 1-wall height perimeter (stone preferred)
  3. [ ] Single entrance with spike traps
  4. [ ] Interior: fire pit + drying rack + storage/sled
  5. [ ] Defensive spikes on all walls
  6. [ ] Deadfall traps at choke points
  7. [ ] 2-3 zipline exits (escape routes)
  8. [ ] Trap chokepoint corridor before the entrance
  9. [ ] Upgraded to stone walls by Day 10
  10. [ ] Second wall perimeter by Day 20

Combat Guide

Weapon Tier List

Weapon Damage Speed Ammo Best Against
Katana 80 Very Fast None Everything (melee)

Mega-Fingers Explosives Boss arena tactics

Story Items — Key Locations

Item Location Hint Purpose
Shovel Bunker Maintenance (southwest of island) Dig up artifact locations, unlock specific doors
Rebreather Cave C (central mountain, underwater entrance) Breathe underwater
Rope Gun Cave A (northwest, near river) Cross gaps, create ziplines
Glider Cave B (east side, high cliff) Traverse large gaps, escape from mutants
Maintenance Keycard Bunker Maintenance (same as shovel) Opens maintenance doors
Guest Keycard Bunker Residential (near lake) Open residential bunker doors
VIP Keycard Bunker Entertainment (northeast) Open luxury bunker doors
Golden Armor Bunker Residential (Guest Keycard area) Required for final ending chamber

Pro Survival Tips

  1. Warmth management: Always have a fire going near your base during rain/snow. Wetness meter = hypothermia risk. Dry off at a fire.
  2. Food preservation: Build a drying rack (6 sticks + 2 rope). Dried meat lasts forever and restores 15 food. 5 drying racks = infinite food supply.
  3. Traps for patrol routes: Cannibals use the same patrol paths. Place deadfall traps on their trails between camps. Check them daily for free loot.
  4. Zipline network: Build ziplines between your base and key locations (caves, shoreline, bunkers). Mutants can follow ziplines but it takes them time — gives you a head start.
  5. Sticks are the best resource: Sticks make arrows, fire, shelter, traps, and crafting upgrades. Always carry a full stack (30+).
  6. Cave prep: Before entering any cave, save. Bring: flashlight, weapon, 3+ meds, 3+ energy mix, flare gun (scare mutants). Don't go underground at night.
  7. Mutant raid schedule: The game escalates raids every 5 days. Night 5: first cannibal raid. Night 10: mutant appears. Night 15: full mutant + cannibal group. Night 20+: you need a stone base.
  8. Creative building exploits: You can build a zipline INTO your base roof for a rooftop escape. Place a log hanging from a rope over your cooking fire for automatic meat smoking.
