🏗️ Grounded Base Building Guide

Last updated: June 2026 | Game version: 1.4 "Fully Yoked"

In Grounded, your base is more than just a place to stash acorn shells and sleep. It's your lifeline — your crafting hub, your respawn point, and your sanctuary from the countless creatures that want to eat you. A poorly placed base will be raided daily by soldier ants, orb weavers, and (in the late game) fire ants and wasps.

This guide covers everything from foundation placement and defensive walls to zipline logistics and boss-prep outposts.

📍 Choosing a Location

The single most important decision in Grounded is where to build your first base. Move it as early as you can, because the starting location near the Mysterious Machine is central but exposed.

Top 5 Base Locations

Location Pros Cons Best For
Oak Tree Base Central map position, abundant resources, near Hedge and Haze. The oak tree's roots provide natural walls. Wolf spiders spawn underneath at night. Lots of orb weaver traffic. All-rounders — the most popular location for a reason
Pond Edge (South) Easy water access, near mosquito farming, safe from ants. Space to expand south. Long trek to Upper Yard. Diving bell spider patrols the water. Fisher / pond lab runners
Hedge Overlook (Northwest) Near Broodmother, abandoned hedge lab has useful tech. Plenty of vertical building opportunities. Far from water. Heavily infested with orb weavers. Boss hunters (early/mid game)
Sandbox Dunes (Southeast) Near Mantis boss, antlion farming, and black ox beetles. Flat terrain. Sandbox has no water. Extremely hot during day (need shade). Antlion pit traps. Sandbox farmers (mid/late game)
Upper Yard Stump (North) Endgame zone — near wasps, black ox, roly polys. Good for late-game outpost. Everything here can kill you. Not safe until Tier-3+ gear. Endgame players

The Oak Tree Meta

If you don't know where to build, build at the Oak Tree. Specifically, build on the large flat root on the southeastern side of the trunk. Benefits:

  • Central map position means travel time to any biome is ≤2 minutes with ziplines
  • The tree's roots provide three natural defensive walls
  • The pond is 30 seconds away for water
  • Grubs, aphids, and weevils spawn within 50m for food
  • The oak lab is right next door for RAW SCIENCE storage

Station a guard on the upper branches and build your main crafting area on the middle root level. Put storage on ground level (enclosed in walls).

🧱 Foundation & Building Types

Grounded has multiple building material tiers. Each tier affects durability, resistance to creature attacks, and aesthetic.

Material Comparison

Material HP Raid Resistance Crafting Looks
Grass Planks 100 Very Low — ants can chew through in 10 seconds 2 weed stems + 2 plant fiber Basic green walls, cheap
Stem Scaffolding 150 Low — looks sturdy but doesn't hold up to wolf spiders 3 stems + 2 woven fiber Brown frame, good for walkways
Acorn Shell 250 Medium — stops ants, slows spiders by 50% 2 acorn shells + 1 crude rope Smooth brown, natural look
Mushroom Brick 400 High — resists orb weavers and fire ants 5 mushroom brick + 1 mushroom slurry Stone-like, durable
Burnt Ash 500 Very High — endgame material, fireproof 3 ash cement + 2 charcoal Dark grey, fortress-grade
Black Ox Horn 600 Extreme — best material in the game 2 black ox horn + 1 supreme plating Metallic black, nearly indestructible

Recommendation: Start with grass/weed for the first shelter. Upgrade to acorn shell walls around your main base once you have the spinning wheel. Mushroom bricks should be your primary building material in mid-game. Black ox horn walls are for boss arenas and endgame fortresses only — they're expensive.

Building Blueprints & Rotation

Grounded's building system uses blueprints. You place a ghost structure and fill it with materials. All buildings have structural integrity — remove the supporting wall and anything above collapses.

Key structural rules:

  1. Floors need support every 3 tiles — a floor 4 tiles wide without a support beam in the middle will collapse.
  2. Stairs don't count as support — always add scaffolding pillars under elevated floors.
  3. Roofs reduce durability from flying enemy raids but also block light for plants. Balance covered and open spaces.
  4. Doors and windows weaken walls — each door is a weak point that creatures will target. Minimize doors in defensive walls.

🛡️ Defensive Fortifications

Creatures in Grounded don't care about walls. If they can pathfind to you, they will chew through your base. Here's how to stop them.

The Moat

Dig a trench at least 3 tiles wide and 2 tiles deep around your base. Most creatures can't path across gaps more than 1 tile wide. Wolf spiders and orb weavers are especially vulnerable to moats — they fall in and can't climb out.

Construction: Use the shovel to dig. Start 2 tiles out from your outermost wall. Dig a U-shape that surrounds the approachable sides of your base. Leave a bridge (plank floor) that you can remove at night.

Palisades & Spike Traps

Defense Materials Effectiveness
Sharpened Stakes 2 grass plank + 3 plant fiber Low — slows ants, does minimal damage
Spike Trap 3 grass plank + 2 sprig + 2 crude rope Medium — deals 40 damage, stops small creatures
Spiky Log Trap 5 grass plank + 3 crude rope + 2 stems High — deals 80 damage, stuns larger creatures
Burr Trap 2 burr weed + 3 plant fiber Very High — deals 120 damage + bleed, stops wolf spiders
Puffball Trap 3 puffball + 2 crude rope High — AOE gas damage, stops swarms
Turrets (late game) Varies — requires RAW SCIENCE Very High — automated defense, ammo-based

The Zipline Perimeter

Late-game bases benefit from a zipline perimeter defense. Build tall towers (stem scaffolding, 4+ high) around your base and connect them with ziplines. Creatures on the ground can't reach you. You can shoot down at them from any tower.

Combine with: A central zipline hub (a tall mast with multiple zipline attachments). From the hub, you can reach every biome in <30 seconds.

🦟 Creature Raid Defense

Grounded has a Raid System — build too much, and creatures get angry. Raids happen when your total base score (based on building pieces and base defenses) exceeds a threshold.

Raid Types by Creature

Creature Triggers When Defense Strategy
Ants You've built in the anthill's territory OR stored food Moat + sharpened stakes. Ants can't cross water.
Orb Weavers Building near the hedge or oak tree Tall walls (they can't climb over 3 tiles). Spiky log traps.
Larva Building in the Haze Fireproof walls (mushroom brick or burnt ash). They burn wood.
Fire Ants Base in Upper Yard Black ox horn walls + burr traps. Fire ants chew through acorn shell in 15 seconds.
Wasps Building in the Upper Yard or Shed Roof your base completely. Wasps can't get through a solid ceiling.
Mosquitoes Building near the pond Ceiling + walls. Mosquitoes need a 3-tile gap to fly through.

Raid Preparation Checklist

  • [ ] Moat dug (at least 2 deep, 3 wide)
  • [ ] All walls are highest available material
  • [ ] No doors on outer wall (use a gate — one weak point is manageable)
  • [ ] 5+ spike traps at each approach
  • [ ] 3+ bandages + smoothies in a "raid chest" near the front gate
  • [ ] Repair tool in hotbar
  • [ ] Extra building materials in chest near the gate for patching

🚄 Zipline Network Guide

Ziplines are the fastest way to traverse the map. Master zipline networks and you'll never walk anywhere again.

Basic Zipline Physics

  • Ziplines require a minimum 3-tile height difference between start and end
  • Longer ziplines need higher starting points
  • You can build zipline relays — chain multiple ziplines through tower hubs
  • Zipline speed increases with height difference (steeper = faster)

Strategic Zipline Hubs

Hub Location Connects To Height Needed
Oak Tree (Root Level) Hedge (2 min), Pond (1 min), Haze (3 min) 6+ stories
Oak Tree (Canopy) Upper Yard (4 min), Sandbox (5 min), Shed (5 min) 12+ stories
Hedge Tower Oak Tree, Grasslands, Pond 4+ stories
Upper Yard Stump Oak Tree, Sandbox, Shed Deck 3+ stories

Pro tip: Build your first zipline from the oak tree canopy to the Hedge Lab entrance. This turns a 10-minute dangerous walk into a 90-second safe glide.

🌿 Farming & Sustenance

Your base needs a renewable food source. Hunting is fine early on, but farming is mandatory for late-game smoothie production.

Farm Plot Crops

Crop Growth Time Yield Use
Mushroom 2 in-game days 5 mushrooms Food, mushroom bricks, smoothies
Clover 1 in-game day 8 clover Early food, bait
Husk 3 in-game days 3 husks Armor upgrades, smoothies
Berry 4 in-game days 6 berries Smoothies, dye
Nectar 5 in-game days 3 nectar Tier-2 smoothies, antidote

Crop rotation: Plant 3 mushroom plots, 2 clover plots, 2 husk plots. This gives you a continuous rotation where you harvest something every in-game day.

Water Collection

Method Output Reliability
Dew Collector 2–3 per day Low — needs rain or morning dew
Canteen (pond filling) 20 per trip High — reliable, but requires travel
Juice Box farm 5–10 per day Medium — juice boxes respawn every 2 days
Rain water collector 5–8 per rain Low — weather-dependent
